Candice Debisette: “Leadership is action”

Attending the United Association for Labor Education UALE Northeast Summer School for Women in Unions & Worker Organizations for the first time was nothing short of amazing. I had the opportunity to strengthen my leadership & advocacy skills, connect with women from different unions, participate in labor actions, & put what I learned into practice.
- True leadership is action, communication, & advocacy, not simply a title.
- As workers, we are better positioned to advocate for ourselves when we know our rights, resources, & collective power.
- Effective communication & emotional intelligence are essential to building trust & leading others.
- Solidarity requires showing up for one another inside & outside the workplace.
- Building relationships & networking across the labor movement strengthens our ability to learn from & support one another.
Participating in my first labor protest was one of the highlights of my experience, which made it even more meaningful. Next year, the UALE Northeast Summer School celebrates its 50th Anniversary, July 19-22, 2027, at Penn State University. See you there.

Bargaining update
We are working to settle Local 768’s Unit Contracts for 2023, which cover unit specific issues, for Health Services, Social Services and Blue Collar. We are united in our unit bargaining demands. Sign our petition now: https://www.local768.net/contract26

Our DC37 contract for city workers also expires in Fall 2026. We’ll negotiate this fall together with all DC37 members in the City. Let’s build our unity now to fight for a contract and city government that make sure that we serve NYC, and can afford NYC. We’ll talk about issues that impact everyone and are important to everyone there, like compressed tours and remote work, based on the DC37 citywide bargaining survey. We won’t win everything, but we’ll keep fighting for everything we care about and keep building for our next bargaining.

AFSCME Convention
This year’s AFSCME Convention is August 17 – 21, 2026 in Chicago. Congratulations to Charlton Smith, Dorcas Bethel, Francis Clarke, Ehizogie Imasuen, Cheydene McGhan, Adama Paddyfoote, Anthony Scruggs and to our president, Carmen De Leon, who is an automatic delegate. We had nine total candidates, and since two declined, no election was held.

Local 768 Elections
This year is also our elections within our local, Local 768. Our nominations meeting is October 5, 2026 at 6:30 pm. Stay tuned for more information about roles, nominations and our election.

Gender identity and pronouns
Local 768 affirms all members’ right to be treated with respect based on their gender identity. We encourage all members to identify their gender pronouns, even if they believe them to be assumed correctly. More information on common gender pronouns can be found here.
This simple practice helps avoid mis-gendering other members, which is referring to another person using the wrong gender pronouns. In addition, NYC Human Rights law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity or expression, including failure to use an individual’s correct pronouns.
