Bargaining with power: we are our front line of defense
Our unity and the union contracts we win together are the source of many of the benefits we enjoy as union members.
Corporations, billionaires and the politicians they back divide us based on racism, sexism or fear.
We — members, stewards, bargaining committee members — are our union’s front line of defense. We're stronger together. Contact the Bargaining Committee member for your title to learn more.
Grievances as an organizing tool
Have you gotten frustrated or felt like it takes a long time for a grievance to be heard? Can we instead use grievances to build our union and change the balance of power, by taking action from the bottom-up? Here are some tips adapted from Labor Notes, thanks!
- Get the grievant(s) directly involved. Let the member carry the grievance as far as possible, helping to write their own grievances and to do the research that makes the grievance winnable.
- Is the issue widely felt? If the grievance clearly and directly affects others, make it a group grievance, with as many signers as possible. Get signers together to work on gathering information and support. (See more on How to Use Grievances to Organize from Labor Notes)
- Involve other members in winning the grievance. Every grievance can help us build strength and unity. Winning grievances is about how well you argue your case, and perhaps even more importantly, it’s also about organizing members to build pressure on management. This workshop will focus on how to win creatively without going to arbitration—or sometimes without even filing a grievance.
